WHAT'S WOOD GOT TO DO WITH IT?
1:30pm-2:30pm in Classroom #2
Host: Raj Sabharwal
Whisk(e)y must be aged in wood barrels, the type of barrel used to age whisky in contributes 60% to 70% of the flavor of the whisky. The selection of the type of Barrel used to age or finish a whisky is one of the most vital elements in whisky production. Whiskey importer Raj Sabharwal will lead you through a comparative tasting of 3 pairs of whiskies to explore and examine the effect of the barrel.
To illustrate his talk, Raj will be using three pairs of Single Cask whiskies. Each pair will be the same whisky and same age, yet aged or finished in different barrels. Whiskies TBA.
A DEEP DIVE INTO BARLEY
1:30pm-2:30pm in Classroom #1
Host: Cherish Varley
You’re invited to join Cherish Varley, the newest member to the single malts team for Remy-Cointreau
Americas, as she samples out malt whiskeys from different corners of the world. Attendees will be sampling
Bruichladdich ‘Classic Ladies’, and Bruichladdich ‘Islay Barley’, discussing the sourcing of ingredients
and how flavor will be impacted by terror. Taking it one step further, we will sample Westland Distillery’s American oak single malt whiskey that has not only barley from the United States and the United Kingdom but different leaves of roasting; thus creating another level of unparalleled flavor. We will compare the American oak (virgin oak casking) to our same distillate in sherry wood (oloroso and PX sherry casks).
Our Whiskey Masterclass series provides a great opportunity for you to learn - and taste! It is comprised of two sets of concurrently-running tasting seminars, conducted in a classroom-style setting.
